Philadelphia Gear

Gearbox Repair for the United States Navy

Since the early twentieth century, Philadelphia Gear has been serving the U.S. Navy by providing ships with gears, sprockets and transmissions in WWI to gearing for Navy destroyers in WWII and now marine gear drives that power warships and work boats of today. The technology may have changed over time, but Philadelphia Gear’s commitment to quality and service, whether it’s drive design or gearbox repair, has stood the test of time.

Currently, Philadelphia gear is designing and manufacturing the main propulsion drives and reduction gears for the San Antonio Class (LPD-17) of ships. The U.S. Navy also looks to Philadelphia Gear for the manufacture and repair of main reduction gearbox assemblies for the following ships:

  • USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51)
  • USS America (LHA 6)
  • USS Freedom (LCS 1)

In addition to main reduction gears (MRGs), Philadelphia Gear also designs and manufactures couplings that are used in propulsion trains of the Virginia Class (SSN774) of submarines, and the Synchrotorque® hyrdoviscous drive has been used for wet brakes, torque control devices, and variable speed drives.

By providing a high caliber of quality and service, it’s no wonder the U.S. Navy trusts Philadelphia Gear for their main reduction gearing needs. When the Navy needs reliable, high performance products that can match the state-of-the-art defense capabilities of a new ship design, they rely on Philadelphia Gear’s 125 years of manufacturing experience and ever evolving machinery upgrades.
